Which stamps are valuable from the “Modern Postage Stamp Album”?
I own the 1940 edition of the “Modern Postage Stamp Album”, passed down from my grandfather. It is partially filled with hundreds of stamps. Do you know if any of the stamps that are included in the album are valuable? Or which ones are the most valuable? I know that there are some websites that identify your stamp for you, but they do little to help a novice like me know if the stamp is valuable or not.
I have several George Washington stamps, other Presidents and notable American figures, Stock Transfer Tax revenue stamps, and stamps from around the world.
If you know which of the stamps that are included in this book are valuable today, please let me know! Thank you for your help!
The reference you need to find is Scott’s Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue (issued every year – now in six volumes). A copy may be available at your local library.
The Modern Album did not allow for a large collection. It was a starter album, and as a result only common stamps of the ti,e were pictured. Collections like these surface frequently, and on the whole are not worth a lot as a rule.
However, there’s always a chance – but a slim one – that there just might be something of value there.
You have some work cut out for you – if you can find a relative or friend interested in stamps, or even coins, you can get some insights fairly quickly.
