Losing SSI Benefits by buying a mobile home?
Lately, I have been looking into buying a small mobile home. I have been on SSI for a while now, and am receiving $674.00 a month. I am agoraphobic (living alone) and pretty much that and food stamps ($134.00) is the only source of money I have coming in.
I know it is not much, but I have found mobile homes with decent taxes and rates on the lot they sit on. Yesterday, however- I received a call from one of my friends saying she heard that to buy any sort of home while on SSI will have the potential to make you lose benefits. Is this true?
I live in Utah by the way.
Social Security Disability and SSI are two different incomes. SSI is driven by the inability to work but not have the credits to draw SSD. And it is income based. You are allowed to own a home but not allowed to have any amount of money in the bank.
I would definitely check with my case worker. Home ownership before qualifying for SSI is one thing, buying a home after qualifying is another.
